Tangled roots and shoots emerge when seeds are sprouted without soil. Dried peas have inspired this work! They can provide fresh salad for us all with no plastic packaging, they need to be rinsed daily with water and placed near a window.
Artist Jennie Pedley has been growing these ‘microgreens’ and studying their shapes. This installation of paper plants may change over time, come back until March 5th 2022 to spot the differences.
The other exhibits in the Edible East Trail about the Future of Food continue around Norwich until the end of March 2022.

A mysterious micro-landscape has emerged in this cabinet, revealing the surface forms of underground life. Look for spiky ‘Shoots’ and ‘Cracked Earth Bowl’ by Keron Beattie, colourful ‘Mould’ by Natasha Day and ceramic ‘Mushrooms’ by Sophie Eade.
Underneath our feet lies a multitude of living things that create the perfect balance of nutrients and minerals, providing fertile soil for plants to grow. In fact, 95% of our food is grown in soil. Caring for the organisms such as fungi and bacteria that are natures composters, providing and exchanging nutrients with plant roots, is of key importance for our survival.
This installation is part of the Edible East Art/Science Trail, which brought together local artists with scientists from across Norwich Research Park to discuss the latest research around some of the biggest challenges facing our planet today in the areas of food, health and sustainability.
